Best eSIM for the 🇬🇧 UK (2026): Top Providers & Plans

A London weekend, a Scottish road trip and a month working from the UK call for different eSIMs. The useful questions are how much data you need, whether you will tether a laptop, and whether a local phone number would help with ordinary calls and texts.

Disclosure: This article contains affiliate links. We may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Quick Verdict: Which UK eSIM Should You Choose?

For a UK-only trip needing around 10GB, Ubigi is our fixed-data value pick: 10GB for 30 days costs US$11 before a reader code. If you need a UK number too, Sim Local’s Lycamobile 20GB, 15-day package costs US$13.25 and includes local calls and texts. The trade-off is activation on installation, so install that local plan after arrival.

  • Saily: app management and built-in security tools, with a straightforward fixed-data range.
  • Airalo: EE access and a choice of short or longer validity periods.
  • Holafly: unlimited phone data, with a separate 1GB daily hotspot limit.
  • Ubigi: low-cost fixed data and a reusable eSIM.
  • Jetpac: useful larger bundles when its public sale is available.
  • Nomad eSIM: 30-day fixed-data packages on Three/EE; the selected data-only products specify 4G.
  • Sim Local: UK operator packages with a local number, calls and texts.

Ubigi is the least expensive fixed-data purchase in both examples. Sim Local costs a little more for a two-week trip but supplies 20GB and a UK number. Airalo’s 15-day validity saves a little against its 30-day 10GB option; Saily’s larger fixed-data packages here last 30 days.

For Uploads, Video Calls and a Laptop

If you expect to use 20GB over two weeks, choose a package that actually covers that allowance and every day of the trip. A daily speed limit can be restrictive when your usage comes in bursts.

Unlimited Phone Data: A Different Product

Holafly sells unlimited phone data by trip length, so it sits separately from the fixed-data table. Its 1GB daily hotspot cap matters more than the word “unlimited” if you want to work from a laptop.

The useful extra is Saily’s security toolkit: web protection, ad blocking and virtual-location features. Those features are a reason to consider the app; they do not establish stronger UK reception or a faster connection.

You can prepare this eSIM before departure. Saily starts the plan when it connects at the destination, but an unused plan activates automatically after its 180-day window. A separately purchased Saily phone-number service uses a US number, so these data packages should not be bought expecting an included UK number.

Choose Saily if…

You value its app features and want an arrival-activated data package for maps, bookings and messages.

Consider another option if…

Your priority is the lowest fixed-data bill or an included UK phone number. Compare Ubigi and Sim Local.

Airalo’s hotspot setup guidance explains when a separate hotspot APN is required. The UK package excludes Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man; choose coverage for those destinations separately.

Choose Airalo if…

You want an EE-based data package with a validity period chosen around your dates.

Unlimited phone data does not mean an unlimited laptop connection. The UK package permits 1GB of sharing per day. Once a laptop starts syncing files or taking video calls, that allowance can become the deciding limit.

Fair-use controls can temporarily reduce phone-data speeds. Holafly’s UK listing does not publish a fixed high-speed GB threshold, so there is no numerical daily speed guarantee to compare with a fixed-data balance. The prepaid travel products here are separate from Holafly Plans subscriptions.

Choose Holafly if…

Most of your usage will stay on the phone and the simplicity of unlimited data justifies the higher trip cost.

You need more than 1GB of hotspot data a day, or your normal phone use fits a smaller fixed-data package.

The 10GB, seven-day option is cheaper still, but its shorter validity is a firm limit. For ten days or two weeks, buy the 30-day package. At a higher allowance, 25GB is the next selected option; treat it as 25GB rather than a 20GB plan.

Ubigi’s eSIM can be reused for later purchases, and its app supports topping up even without Wi-Fi or remaining data credits. Reusing the profile does not extend the validity or geographic coverage of the UK balance. These are one-off purchases; monthly subscriptions have different billing and offer conditions.

Choose Ubigi if…

You need affordable UK data for a phone, tablet or occasional laptop tethering and can budget a shared allowance.

Consider another option if…

You want native UK calls and texts, or enough data to avoid budgeting substantial daily laptop use.

Lycamobile 20GB for 15 days is the useful smaller purchase for a two-week stay. It includes a UK number, unlimited local calls and texts, and hotspot. Its advertised EU roaming allowance is 12GB for the listed destinations, not the full 20GB UK balance.

For a month or heavier data use, compare EE and Three. The EE 80GB and 150GB rows are bonus-data offers; their allowances can change when the promotion ends. The Three 100GB row provides a larger alternative on a different UK network. Its included roaming allowance is also separate from the domestic balance.

Installation timing is crucial. The EE and Lycamobile packages shown activate immediately when installed, so wait until arrival. The selected Three package supplies a four-digit confirmation code by email and recommends activation after arrival. Have the instructions saved and an internet connection available for setup.

Choose Sim Local if…

You need local UK calls or texts, or a larger domestic bundle for a longer stay. Compare the actual operator at your accommodation.

You want to install the EE or Lycamobile package weeks before travelling, or need its entire UK data allowance to work across Europe.

Coverage, UK Numbers and Onward Travel

London Coverage Does Not Predict a Scottish Road Trip

A UK plan can cover England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland without providing a usable signal at every cottage, valley or rail tunnel. The local network behind your package matters when your route leaves major cities.

Use Ofcom’s mobile coverage checker with the postcode of your accommodation. Compare the operator named for the exact package and the indoor or outdoor prediction you need. Coverage maps are predictions, not a guarantee of reception or speed.

Save maps, accommodation details and tickets offline before a rural drive or an Underground journey. A 5G badge cannot remove a dead spot or guarantee a usable connection inside a building.

Do You Need a UK Phone Number?

If all your calling stays in WhatsApp, FaceTime or another internet app, a data-only package may be enough. A UK number becomes more useful when you need to call ordinary local numbers or exchange native SMS.

The selected Sim Local packages include a UK number and local calls and texts. Saily’s separate number service provides a US number, and a data-only eSIM does not inherit voice features from another package sold by the same brand. An included number also does not guarantee acceptance by every verification service.

UK, Ireland and Europe Are Different Coverage Decisions

The Republic of Ireland is a separate destination from Northern Ireland. Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man also need explicit inclusion; Airalo’s selected UK package excludes them. Do not assume a UK label covers every nearby island.

For London followed by Dublin or Paris, check every stop and the usable roaming allowance before paying. A local UK bundle may supply less data abroad than at home. A regional package instead usually uses one shared balance across its included countries.

Our Europe eSIM comparison covers that wider buying decision. For a broader itinerary, use the international travel eSIM guide or browse guides by destination.

How to Choose and Set Up Your UK eSIM

  1. Check the exact phone and carrier lock. Use our eSIM compatibility guide before buying. Support can depend on the model’s regional version.
  2. Budget data around your habits. A weekend with hotel Wi-Fi is different from two weeks of video calls. Look at recent mobile usage, allow room for the trip, and keep cloud backups and large app updates on Wi-Fi. Our travel data guide helps with the estimate.
  3. Read the activation trigger before installing. Arrival-activated data packages can usually be prepared at home. The selected EE and Lycamobile packages from Sim Local start on installation, so install them after arrival instead.
  4. Select the travel line for mobile data. Follow its roaming and APN instructions. Keep data roaming off on the home line and disable automatic data switching if you want to prevent it being used for mobile data.
  5. Check the connection and remaining allowance. Test maps or a webpage, then hotspot if needed. Keep the eSIM profile installed; deleting it is not a routine connection fix.

If you keep the home line active for bank messages or calls, check your home operator’s roaming charges separately. The travel eSIM does not change the price of using that other line.

For the installation screens, follow our iPhone eSIM setup guide or Android eSIM setup guide.

Final Verdict

For around 10GB of UK data, start with Ubigi. Its 30-day US$11 package is the clearest fixed-data value in these examples. Choose Saily for its app features, or Airalo when its EE access and shorter validity fit your dates.

If local calls matter, Sim Local deserves a closer look. Its Lycamobile 20GB, 15-day package combines data with a UK number at US$13.25; EE and Three offer larger 30-day alternatives. Install at the right time for the operator you buy.

Holafly makes more sense for heavy usage on the phone than for daily laptop tethering. Jetpac’s larger sale bundles and Nomad eSIM’s 30-day fixed-data plans are alternatives when their allowance and conditions fit. The useful winner is the package that covers your trip, rather than the lowest advertised starting price.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best eSIM for UK travel?

For a UK-only trip needing about 10GB, Ubigi is our fixed-data value pick at US$11 for 30 days. Sim Local is more useful if you also want a local number and calls. The right package still depends on trip length, hotspot use and the operator’s coverage at your stops.

What is the cheapest UK eSIM in this comparison?

Among the selected entry packages, Airalo offers 1GB for three days at US$4. For our week-long scenario requiring at least 5GB, Ubigi’s 10GB, seven-day package has the lowest purchase price at US$9. A cheap entry package and the cheapest suitable trip purchase are different comparisons.

Can I get a UK eSIM with a local phone number?

Yes. The selected Sim Local Lycamobile, EE and Three packages include a UK number and local calls and texts. Other providers also sell calling-enabled products, but the data-only rows in this article do not include that service.

Can I use a UK travel eSIM with a laptop?

Yes, with a hotspot-supported package and compatible phone. Fixed-data tethering spends the same balance as your phone. Holafly UK has a separate 1GB daily hotspot cap, while Jetpac’s listed unlimited product gives 3GB of high-speed data per 24-hour cycle across usage before an up-to-1-Mbps fallback.

Does a UK eSIM work in Scotland and Northern Ireland?

The selected UK coverage includes those destinations. Actual reception depends on the local network and location, particularly in rural areas. Check the postcode of remote accommodation and save offline essentials.

Does a UK eSIM cover Ireland, Jersey or the Isle of Man?

Check each destination explicitly. The Republic of Ireland is separate from the UK, and Airalo’s selected UK package excludes Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. Regional packages and local roaming allowances have their own country lists and data limits.

Should I install the eSIM before flying to the UK?

Only when the package’s activation rules allow it. Saily, Ubigi and the selected Nomad data packages can be prepared in advance within their purchase windows. Sim Local’s selected EE and Lycamobile products start when installed, so wait until arrival.

Can I keep WhatsApp and my home SIM?

Using a different data line does not require changing your existing WhatsApp number. On a compatible dual-SIM phone, you can keep the home line active and select the travel eSIM for data. Charges on the home line still follow that operator’s roaming terms.

Stay connected. Spend less.
