Nomad eSIM Review (2026): Is It Worth It?

Nomad offers local, regional and global eSIMs through its web store and mobile app, with fixed-data and unlimited choices for many destinations. This updated Nomad eSIM review covers the details that matter before you buy: current prices, network information, hotspot use, add-ons, activation, support, the Free Trial, rewards and Nomad Pass.

Nomad eSIM: Quick Verdict

Nomad eSIM is a strong all-round choice for travelers who want flexible prepaid data, clearly listed plan details, hotspot support and simple app-based management. The catalog covers local, regional and global trips, while eligible add-ons, a Free Trial for new users, Nomad Points, Weekly Wins and the separate Nomad Pass give both first-time and repeat customers useful ways to get more value.

The main cautions are straightforward: the standard plans covered here are data only, unlimited plans use plan-specific high-speed allowances before reduced speeds apply, and add-ons must be purchased while an eligible eSIM is still active. We explain those limits next to the relevant benefits so you can choose the right plan before checkout.

Table of Contents

Nomad eSIM stands out by combining broad plan choice with useful details before checkout. Travelers can choose between local, regional and global coverage, fixed-data packages and selected unlimited plans, then check the relevant network, radio access, activation rule, hotspot support and add-on availability for the specific plan.

The most useful part of Nomad’s buying flow is the level of plan-specific information. For the plans checked in this review, the details showed the included data, validity, provider, network access, hotspot status, activation method and whether an add-on was available. That makes it easier to compare suitable Nomad plans without relying only on a starting price or a broad coverage claim.

How We Researched This Review

We reviewed current Nomad product pages and plan details for the USA, Japan and Europe, together with Nomad’s published terms for unlimited data, add-ons, activation, support, refunds, the Free Trial, rewards and Nomad Pass. We did not conduct independent speed or coverage tests, so network references describe documented access rather than guaranteed real-world performance.

For broader provider-specific analysis, see our other travel eSIM reviews.

Nomad eSIM Plans and Current Prices

Nomad eSIM offers enough choice to match the plan to the trip instead of buying one generic package. Fixed-data plans provide a defined allowance for a set validity period, while selected destinations also have unlimited plans sold by duration. Local plans suit one-country trips; regional and global plans can cover multiple included destinations with one package.

Fixed data is usually the easiest value comparison when you can estimate your usage. Unlimited plans replace a fixed total allowance with plan-specific daily high-speed data rules, so always open Plan Details to check the allowance and reduced speed before buying.

Representative current Nomad eSIM prices for three popular destinations
Destination Fixed-data example Lowest-priced unlimited option checked
USA 10GB for 30 days — US$25 3 days — US$11
Japan 10GB for 30 days — US$16 on sale (US$18 regular) 3 days — US$11
Europe 10GB for 30 days — US$23 5 days — US$19
Prices checked September 15, 2026. Sales can change. Unlimited options are subject to plan-specific daily high-speed allowances and reduced-speed rules.

There are smaller entry plans and much larger packages too. At the time of checking, fixed-data plans started at US$4 for Japan, US$5 for the USA and US$5.50 for Europe. Current higher-data sale examples included 20GB for US$23 in Japan, 20GB for US$27 in Europe and 50GB for US$41 in the USA. This range lets light users avoid paying for excess data while giving longer trips room to scale up.

Coverage, Networks and Speed Expectations

One of Nomad eSIM’s most useful advantages is that buyers can inspect network details before checkout. Depending on the plan, Nomad shows the local carrier, available network type and the countries included. This makes it easier to check whether a package fits your route instead of relying only on a broad coverage claim.

Nomad eSIM offers local plans for individual countries and regional or global packages for multi-country travel. On an eligible regional plan, the eSIM can connect to a supported local partner as you cross borders, allowing you to keep the same eSIM and data package active throughout the covered route.

Access to more than one listed carrier is a practical benefit. Nomad normally selects a supported network automatically, while manual network selection can provide another option if the initial connection struggles. However, the available carrier still depends on the exact plan, location and current roaming agreement.

A 5G or 4G label describes supported network access, not a guaranteed speed. Real performance depends on local signal strength, congestion, device compatibility, roaming priority and network routing. For the most realistic expectation, check the exact Plan Details and compare the listed carrier’s coverage map with the places you will visit.

For a wider comparison of coverage approaches and travel use cases, see our best eSIM for travel guide.

Unlimited Data, Hotspot and Add-ons

Nomad eSIM gives travelers three useful ways to stay flexible: duration-based unlimited plans, hotspot support and add-ons for eligible fixed-data packages. Together, these options make it easier to handle heavier usage, connect another device or extend a trip without immediately installing a separate eSIM.

How Nomad Unlimited Data Works

Nomad’s unlimited plans keep mobile data available for the selected number of days, but unlimited does not mean unrestricted high-speed data. Nomad’s general policy says most plans include 2GB of high-speed data per day. After that allowance is used, speeds are normally reduced to around 1Mbps or 2Mbps until the high-speed allowance resets 24 hours after activation.

Some current destination pages publish different reduced-speed terms, including 512kbps. The exact Plan Details therefore take priority over the general description. These plans are best when continued access matters more than maintaining maximum speed after heavy daily use; travelers planning sustained video streaming or large downloads should also compare Nomad’s larger fixed-data packages.

For a broader comparison of daily allowances and speed policies, see our unlimited eSIM plans guide.

Hotspot and Tethering

Hotspot support is a practical advantage for travelers carrying a laptop, tablet or second phone. The 10GB fixed-data plans checked for the USA, Japan and Europe each listed hotspot support. Tethered traffic uses the same plan allowance, so it should be treated as part of the included data or the unlimited plan’s daily FUP rather than as a separate hotspot quota.

Because hotspot terms can vary between packages, check the selected Plan Details before buying—especially if tethering will be your main way of working while abroad.

How to Add More Data

Eligible plans can be extended with an add-on tied to the same Nomad eSIM, avoiding another QR code or installation. Nomad’s current instructions require the original plan to remain active when the add-on is purchased:

  1. Open Manage in the Nomad app or website.
  2. Select the active eSIM you want to extend.
  3. Choose Add more data and complete checkout.

The add-on starts automatically after the original data is depleted or its validity ends. Any unused original data does not roll over when expiry triggers the add-on. Not every Nomad eSIM supports add-ons, and purchases are unavailable while physically located in the UAE or India, so confirm eligibility before the current package runs out.

Installation, Activation and App Management

Nomad eSIM is straightforward to prepare before departure and manage from one place after activation. The app and website provide access to installation details, activation status, remaining data, usage and expiry, reducing the need to search through old emails while traveling.

Before You Install

First, check whether your phone supports eSIM and confirm that it is unlocked. You will also need a stable internet connection during installation. Keep the installation email and ICCID available because they can help identify the correct profile if you need support later.

How to Install and Activate Nomad eSIM

  1. Open the purchased plan in the Nomad app or installation email.
  2. Use the in-app installation option, scan the supplied QR code or enter the provided details manually.
  3. Give the new line a clear label such as Nomad Travel.
  4. Keep the eSIM line turned off until you reach the covered destination unless your installation instructions say otherwise.
  5. On arrival, turn on the Nomad eSIM, select it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line.
  6. Leave network selection on automatic first and allow the phone time to register with a supported local carrier.

For the USA, Japan and Europe plans checked for this review, installation can be completed in advance. The plan normally starts when the eSIM first connects to an eligible destination network or automatically 60 days after purchase, whichever happens first. Some Thailand unlimited plans and products requiring manual activation follow different rules, so the specific Plan Details and installation email take priority.

On a compatible Dual SIM phone, you can usually keep your primary SIM active for calls and messages while using Nomad eSIM for data. Assign mobile data specifically to Nomad and disable roaming or automatic data switching on the home line if you want to avoid accidental carrier charges.

Managing Data in the Nomad App

The Manage section shows the active plan, data used, remaining allowance and expiration date. Nomad also states that email and push notifications are sent at 60% and 80% usage. From the same plan screen, travelers can verify the ICCID and check whether an eligible add-on is available.

Quick Connection Fixes

  • Confirm in Manage that the plan is active, unexpired and still has data.
  • Make sure the Nomad eSIM is enabled, selected for mobile data and has Data Roaming turned on.
  • Turn Airplane Mode on for at least 30 seconds, switch it off and then restart the phone if needed.
  • If the connection still fails, check the supplied APN and manually select a listed partner network.

Do not delete the installed eSIM as the first troubleshooting step. Contact Nomad support before removing the profile if the basic checks fail, because the correct reinstallation process can depend on the plan. Our eSIM setup and troubleshooting guides provide additional device-specific help.

Free Trial, Rewards and Nomad Pass

Nomad eSIM adds useful value beyond a one-off travel data plan. Eligible new users can try the service without paying, repeat customers can earn credit and app-based rewards, and frequent Europe travelers can keep one recurring eSIM active through Nomad Pass.

Nomad eSIM Free Trial

Eligible new users can redeem 1GB in the Nomad app with no payment card required. The current offer is available for 76 destinations, remains valid for three days after activation, supports hotspot use and can be installed up to 15 days before travel. It starts when the eSIM connects at a covered destination; if it remains unused, Nomad says it will activate automatically 15 days after redemption.

The Free Trial and the MYTECHGUIDE15 first-purchase discount cannot be combined. Redeeming the Trial removes eligibility for other first-time-user promotions, so compare both offers and choose the more valuable option before proceeding.

Nomad Points

Nomad Points turn repeat purchases into account credit. The current program awards 25 points for every US$5 spent, and 100 points can be redeemed for US$1 at checkout—equivalent to 5% back in Nomad credit at that conversion rate. Points expire six months after they are earned. Nomad also currently advertises 200 bonus points for returning users who buy a plan with 10GB or more.

Weekly Wins

Weekly Wins is available to Nomad eSIM users in the app and rewards one check-in per week. During weeks 1–5 of each cycle, the current sequence unlocks Nomad Points, discount codes and small data add-ons; week 6 is reserved for using the rewards before the cycle resets.

One catch-up check-in is allowed during each five-week earning phase, but only for the most recently missed week. Unused rewards expire at the end of week 6, and Nomad currently allows up to eight cycles per year. For travelers who already use the app regularly, this is a simple way to build extra value between trips.

Nomad Pass for Frequent Europe Travel

Nomad Pass is especially appealing as a low-cost standby connection for people who return to Europe regularly. It costs US$3 every 30 days and keeps one eSIM active across the 35-country Europe plan. Each billing cycle adds 1GB of base data, while eligible regular Europe add-ons receive an automatic 15% discount, excluding the already discounted 1GB add-on.

The Pass renews automatically every 30 days, but it can be canceled without a termination fee. Unused base data does not roll over to the next cycle. Travelers who need much more than 1GB for a single trip can use the discounted add-ons or compare other eSIM options for Europe before subscribing.

Support, Refunds and Important Limits

Nomad eSIM provides clear support and refund routes if a plan does not work as expected. The company advertises 24/7 customer support through live chat and email, while its current help pages direct travelers to website chat or the in-app chat on iOS and Android.

How to Get Help

Before contacting support, confirm that the plan is active, has remaining data and is selected as the mobile-data line with Data Roaming enabled. If the basic connection checks do not solve the problem, prepare the following information:

  • Your order details and the email used for the purchase.
  • The plan status and ICCID shown in the Nomad app.
  • Screenshots of the SIM Manager, cellular settings, APN and any error messages.
  • A short list of the troubleshooting steps already attempted.

Do not delete the eSIM before contacting support unless Nomad specifically instructs you to do so. Removing a single-use profile can complicate reinstallation and may also affect refund eligibility.

Nomad eSIM Refund Policy

Refund requests must generally be submitted within 30 days of purchase. An eSIM that has not been installed or a plan that has not been activated may qualify for a full refund after review by support. Nomad can return the money to the original payment method, normally within 2–5 business days, or issue Nomad Points that become available immediately.

Once a plan has been activated, a full refund is not guaranteed. A partial refund for unused data may be considered when usage was limited and Nomad can confirm that a network or technical failure prevented the service from working. Plans purchased for an incorrect date or region may also qualify, depending on the circumstances.

Some products are explicitly non-refundable. The current exclusions include all Unlimited plans, the Europe Nomad Pass subscription, UK Voice plans and the Thailand 10-day 50GB plan. Check the individual product page before purchasing because plan-specific terms take priority.

Important Limits to Check Before Buying

  • Most plans covered in this review are data only. They do not include a regular local number for calls or SMS, so keep your primary SIM active or use internet-based calling apps.
  • Unlimited plans have a Fair Usage Policy. High-speed data is limited according to the selected package before reduced speeds apply.
  • An activated plan cannot be paused. Its validity continues counting down even when the eSIM is switched off.
  • Activation deadlines vary. Most standard plans can activate automatically 60 days after purchase. The Free Trial starts when it connects at a covered destination, can activate automatically 15 days after redemption and remains valid for three days after activation.
  • Add-ons are plan dependent. Not every eSIM supports them, and an eligible add-on should be purchased before the original plan expires.

These conditions are manageable when checked before checkout. The exact Plan Details, activation instructions and refund terms should always be treated as the final rules for the selected Nomad eSIM package.

Who Should Choose Nomad eSIM?

Nomad eSIM is best suited to travelers who want a practical balance of price, plan choice and control. It is particularly compelling when the selected destination offers a competitive 5GB–20GB package, clearly listed partner networks and the option to manage everything from the app.

Nomad eSIM Is a Strong Fit If You…

  • Want enough data for everyday travel. Fixed 5GB–20GB plans are well suited to navigation, messaging, browsing, social media and occasional video without paying for unlimited data.
  • Are visiting several countries. Regional plans let you keep one package active across the included destinations instead of buying a new eSIM at every border.
  • Need hotspot access. The representative USA, Japan and Europe fixed-data plans checked for this review supported tethering for a laptop, tablet or second phone.
  • Prefer to prepare before departure. Most standard plans can be installed in advance and start after connecting to a supported network at the destination.
  • Might extend the trip. Eligible add-ons can continue on the same active eSIM, while the Manage section shows usage and expiry.
  • Want value before and after the first purchase. New users may qualify for the Free Trial, returning customers can benefit from Nomad Points and Weekly Wins, and Nomad Pass is especially useful for regular Europe travel.

For most travelers, a fixed-data plan with a small allowance buffer is the strongest starting point. Choose unlimited only when continuous access matters more than maintaining full speed after the daily high-speed allowance is used.

When Another eSIM May Fit Better

  • You need a local phone number. The standard plans checked for this review were data only, so they are not designed for regular cellular calls or SMS.
  • You want one reusable profile for future destinations. Saily may be more convenient for this specific use case and also includes built-in security tools; see our Saily vs Nomad eSIM comparison.
  • Another provider has a better exact plan for your destination. Nomad eSIM is not automatically the cheapest in every country, so compare matching allowances, validity and networks. Our Nomad eSIM vs Airalo guide provides a practical route-by-route decision.
  • You require unrestricted full-speed data or a refundable unlimited plan. Nomad’s unlimited packages use a Fair Usage Policy and are currently listed as non-refundable.

Nomad eSIM should remain near the top of the shortlist when its exact plan matches your route and data needs. Its strongest case is the complete package: competitive plan options, transparent network details, hotspot support, advance setup and useful benefits for returning travelers.

Final Verdict: Is Nomad eSIM Worth It?

Yes. Nomad eSIM is worth considering for most travelers who need straightforward prepaid data, especially when its fixed-data or regional plans match the destination and expected usage. It combines a broad choice of packages with useful plan-level network information, advance installation, hotspot support on the plans checked for this review and practical app-based management.

Nomad eSIM also offers more long-term value than a basic one-trip data plan. Eligible add-ons can extend an active eSIM, new users may qualify for the Free Trial, returning customers can earn Nomad Points and Weekly Wins rewards, and Nomad Pass provides a simple recurring option for frequent Europe travel.

It is less suitable if you need a regular local phone number, unrestricted full-speed unlimited data or one profile designed to accept plans for future destinations. For everyone else, Nomad eSIM is a well-rounded and easy-to-recommend travel option, provided you check the exact network, activation, Fair Usage Policy and refund terms for the selected plan before paying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nomad eSIM Legit?

Yes. Nomad eSIM operates an official web store and mobile apps, publishes plan, support and refund information, and advertises travel-data coverage in more than 200 destinations. The exact networks, speeds and features still depend on the selected plan and location.

Does Nomad eSIM Include a Phone Number?

The representative USA, Japan and Europe plans checked for this review were data only and did not include a local number. Nomad states that some products may include a phone number, so check the exact Plan Details before buying. With a data-only plan, internet calling apps still work, and you can keep your primary SIM active for calls and SMS if your phone supports Dual SIM.

Can I Use Nomad eSIM as a Hotspot?

Yes, on supported plans. The fixed 10GB plans checked for the USA, Japan and Europe each listed hotspot support. Tethered devices use the same data allowance, and an unlimited plan’s Fair Usage Policy still applies, so confirm the selected package before relying on it for laptop work.

When Should I Install and Activate Nomad eSIM?

Install the eSIM before departure while you have a stable internet connection. Most current standard plans start when they first connect to a supported network at the destination or automatically 60 days after purchase, whichever happens first. Manual-activation products and some Thailand unlimited plans can follow different rules, so the installation email and Plan Details take priority.

Does Nomad eSIM Have a Free Trial?

Yes. Eligible new users can currently redeem 1GB for 76 destinations through the Nomad app without providing a payment card. The Free Trial remains valid for three days after activation and supports hotspot use. It starts when the eSIM connects at a covered destination or automatically 15 days after redemption if it remains unused. Redeeming the Trial removes eligibility for other first-time-user promotions.

What Is Nomad Pass?

Nomad Pass is a US$3 recurring 30-day subscription for the 35-country Europe plan. It includes 1GB that refreshes each billing cycle and 15% off eligible Europe add-ons, excluding the 1GB add-on. The subscription renews automatically, unused base data does not roll over, and it can be canceled without a termination fee.

Should I Delete Nomad eSIM If It Is Not Working?

No. First confirm the active data line and Data Roaming, toggle Airplane Mode and the eSIM, restart the phone, and try a listed partner network if necessary. Deleting the profile may make it invalid or complicate reinstallation, so contact Nomad support before removing it.
