Nomad eSIM vs Airalo (2026): Which Is Better?

Nomad eSIM and Airalo both sell fixed-data and unlimited travel eSIMs, but the better choice depends on your destination, data needs and travel dates. We compared public USD prices and plan terms across the United States, Spain, Japan, Thailand and Mexico for three trips: 5GB over 7 days, 10GB over 14 days and 20GB over 21 days. Prices and conditions were checked on September 21, 2026.

Nomad eSIM vs Airalo: Quick Verdict

Choose Nomad eSIM for lower 10GB/30-day prices in Thailand and Mexico, and in Japan while the checked sale is available. Its selected 10GB plans also list two local carriers in each of our five destinations, with hotspot sharing and eligible add-ons supported. The 30-day allowance gives you room if a two-week stay becomes three weeks, provided data remains.

Choose Airalo for a cheaper US 10GB/30-day plan, or when its shorter packages fit firm travel dates. Its 5GB/seven-day plans cost less in the United States, Spain and Thailand. The selected fixed plans also support top-ups after the original allowance or validity ends, with conditional reuse of the installed eSIM on a later trip.

Airalo also offers 30-day packages: at 10GB/30 days, Spain is tied, and Japan is tied at the displayed regular prices. Compare validity separately from future reuse. A longer validity period gives you more time to use data already purchased; reuse can save another installation when you buy a new allowance.

Nomad eSIM scores 82.1/100; Airalo’s score remains a range of 77.5–82.6/100. The range reflects an unconfirmed point about viewing remaining data and expiry for the selected Airalo plans. Because the results overlap, we do not declare an overall winner. See how we calculated the scores.

Scores cover three single-country trips: 5GB over 7 days, 10GB over 14 days and 20GB over 21 days, compared across the United States, Spain, Japan, Thailand and Mexico. Prices and conditions were checked on September 21, 2026. The scores measure documented suitability for these trips; we did not conduct speed or coverage tests.

Airalo’s range reflects an unconfirmed point about viewing both remaining data and expiry for the selected plans. It does not establish that the feature is missing. Because the results overlap, the row order does not indicate first and second place. See how we calculated our editorial scores.

How We Compared Nomad eSIM and Airalo

We compared single-country trips in the United States, Spain, Japan, Thailand and Mexico, with each destination weighted equally. Within each country, a 5GB/seven-day trip contributes 25%, a 10GB/14-day trip contributes 50%, and a 20GB/21-day trip contributes 25%. These are our chosen comparison scenarios, not a claim about every traveler’s needs.

We considered checked local fixed-data and unlimited plans, plus up to two sequential fixed-data purchases under the same rules for both providers. The highest-scoring eligible purchase represents each provider; the cheapest suitable option is shown separately in the price tables. Prices are compared against the median cost of the cheapest suitable purchases from a fixed sample of Nomad eSIM, Airalo and aloSIM. Public sales are included; reader codes, first-purchase discounts, free trials and rewards are excluded.

Scores cover price and value (30 points), data limits and hotspot use (25), network options (15), setup and plan management (20), and terms and assistance (10). We checked official plan information, help documents and plan screenshots on September 21, 2026. We did not test connection speeds, signal quality or support response times.

Trip and device assumptions

The comparison assumes an unlocked, eSIM-compatible iPhone 15 with iOS 18 or later, purchase within 30 days before travel and no requirement for a local phone number. First-day usage is 1GB, 2GB or 3GB respectively, with the remaining data spread evenly across the trip. Hotspot traffic makes up 20% of that total. Regional plans, global plans and subscriptions are outside this local-plan comparison.

Exact totals sum the rounded category scores. Range endpoints are rounded outward from the underlying calculation, so they can differ slightly from the sum of displayed categories.

Why Airalo has a range: one five-point criterion covers viewing both the remaining allowance and expiry in the app or website. Nomad eSIM documents both; Airalo’s guidance makes balance display conditional. We could not confirm both for the selected Airalo plans. Criteria representing the other 95 points have documented inputs. The range reflects incomplete evidence, not proof that the feature is missing.

Trip flexibility and future reuse are considered separately. We show each package’s actual validity and compare equal-duration alternatives so readers can see the room available if dates change. Continuing on the installed eSIM earns credit under setup and management; future-trip reuse receives no additional bonus. See how validity, top-ups and reuse differ.

The results overlap, including when price or network options receive more weight, so they do not establish an overall winner. Using displayed regular prices instead of known sales lowers Nomad eSIM’s score to 81.6. Choose according to the destination, required allowance and flexibility you need.

Nomad eSIM vs Airalo Prices

Airalo has the lower eligible price in the United States and Spain for the 5GB and 10GB requirements, while Nomad eSIM is US$1 cheaper at 5GB and US$2 cheaper at 10GB in Mexico. Thailand splits by allowance, and Japan is tied at 5GB. For Japan at 10GB, Nomad eSIM leads while its public US$16 sale is available.

The tables show the cheapest checked fixed-data purchases covering 5GB for 7 days, 10GB for 14 days and 20GB for 21 days. These are minimum requirements, so each package’s actual allowance and validity are shown. The selected Nomad eSIM packages last 30 days; Airalo’s selected packages last 7, 15 or 30 days.

Public USD prices checked September 21, 2026. Nomad eSIM’s lower prices in the United States and Japan depend on the displayed sales.

Thailand, 21 days: Nomad eSIM’s US$20 total covers two separate 10GB/30-day purchases. You need to install a second eSIM and switch the mobile-data line when the first allowance runs out. Add-on prices are not assumed to match new-plan prices. Airalo provides 20GB for 30 days in one US$18 package. Nomad eSIM’s separate 50GB/10-day product does not cover the full three-week trip.

Mexico: the selected Airalo and Nomad eSIM packages are data-only. Prices for packages that include local calls and SMS are outside this comparison.

Packages used in the score: the scored purchases match the cheapest choices above except in three cases, where a larger allowance earns a better overall result:

  • Nomad eSIM, United States, 21 days: 50GB / 30 days for US$41 on sale (US$60 regular).
  • Airalo, United States, 21 days: 50GB / 30 days for US$42.
  • Nomad eSIM, Thailand, 7 days: 10GB / 30 days for US$10.

Each score uses the price and conditions of that actual purchase, including its extra data.

If your dates may change, compare equal validity. Nomad eSIM’s 30-day packages leave more time than the selected 7- or 15-day Airalo plans, but Airalo also sells 30-day alternatives. Extra validity extends the time available to use the allowance; it does not add data. See our 30-day comparison and explanation of top-ups and future-trip reuse.

Reader codes and first-purchase discounts are excluded throughout. Public prices and sales can change, so compare the final checkout total. If your destination is not listed here, compare the cheapest travel eSIM options using the same data and validity minimums.

Fixed Data vs Unlimited Plans

For the 5–20GB trips compared here, fixed data is the better starting point. A single allowance lets you use more data on busy days and less on others. Unlimited becomes useful when you want the connection to continue after a high-speed allowance runs out, provided the reduced speed is sufficient for what you need.

Airalo 5GB / 7 days

5GB per day, then 1Mbps
Public USD prices and the selected USA unlimited allowances checked September 21, 2026. Both fixed packages cover the seven-day trip, but their validity differs. Reduced-speed limits are not guaranteed connection speeds.

If 5GB is enough for the week, the fixed package saves US$7 with Nomad eSIM or US$12.50 with Airalo compared with each provider’s unlimited option.

Among these two seven-day USA unlimited plans, Airalo is the better buy for heavier daily phone use. For US$2 more, it provides 5GB per day before slowing down, compared with Nomad eSIM’s 2GB. Nomad eSIM saves US$2 if 2GB per day meets your needs.

Nomad eSIM’s checked USA unlimited plan supports hotspot sharing, with tethered traffic using the same daily allowance. It has no add-on option and is marked non-refundable. Check the selected package’s hotspot and refund terms before purchasing either provider’s unlimited plan.

A daily allowance is less useful when usage comes in bursts. A 3GB day would exceed Nomad eSIM’s high-speed allowance but remain within Airalo’s 5GB allowance. A sufficiently large fixed package gives you more freedom to concentrate usage on one day without a daily reset. These limits apply to the selected USA packages; other destinations and durations need their own comparison.

We considered fixed and unlimited options against the same trip requirements. The purchases selected for the published scores are fixed-data packages, while the unlimited recommendation above applies specifically to heavier daily use on a seven-day USA trip. See our unlimited-data eSIM guide for more destinations and practical fair-use comparisons.

Networks and Multi-Country Travel

Nomad eSIM’s clearest carrier-choice advantage is in Spain: its selected fixed plans list Movistar and Orange, while Airalo lists Orange. Airalo has its own advantages: its selected Japan plans list 5G, and its current Mexico data-only plans include both Movistar and AT&T.

Across all the purchases used in our scoring, documented network options contribute 14.2/15 for Nomad eSIM and 14.4/15 for Airalo. These scores reflect listed network access and 4G/5G availability, not measured speed or coverage quality.

Plan-level information checked September 21, 2026. The table covers the selected local fixed-data packages; unlimited, regional and special packages can use different networks.

Every selected Nomad eSIM 10GB plan lists two operators, compared with four of the five selected Airalo 10GB plans. However, carrier access can change with the allowance, as Nomad eSIM’s 20GB Japan package shows. Check the exact package rather than assuming that all plans for a destination share the same networks.

A second supported operator gives you another connection option, but switching does not guarantee better service at a particular location. Buildings, terrain, congestion, device compatibility and local coverage still matter. A 5G label also describes supported access rather than a promise that the connection will be faster.

Local or Regional eSIM?

Choose a local plan when your trip stays in one country, using the listed carriers to check coverage along your route. Nomad eSIM is worth considering when its additional Movistar option in Spain is useful; Airalo offers documented 5G access in Japan and two listed operators on its selected 20GB package.

For a multi-country trip, choose a regional package that covers every stop with enough data and validity for the whole journey. It can keep one eSIM active across included borders, but its networks may differ from the local plans above. Regional plans are outside the scores in this article, so compare the exact country list and plan conditions before buying.

Hotspot, Setup, Top-Ups and Trip Flexibility

Flexibility during this trip and reuse on a future trip are different benefits. A longer validity period gives you more time to use the data you have already bought. Reusing an installed eSIM later saves another installation, but you still need a suitable paid package for that future trip.

If Your Trip Lasts Longer Than Expected

The compared Nomad eSIM 10GB plans last 30 days. If a two-week stay becomes three weeks, the original package can keep working without another purchase, provided you still have data and remain in a supported destination. Airalo also sells 30-day plans, so compare equal validity when your dates are uncertain.

United States US$25 US$22 US$22.50
Spain US$14 US$13.50 US$14
Japan US$16 sale

Thailand US$10 US$10.50 US$11
Mexico US$15.50 US$17.50 US$18.50
Public USD prices checked September 21, 2026, without reader codes or first-purchase discounts. These are alternative purchases: the price difference does not buy an extension to an existing 15-day package.

For 10GB with a full 30-day window, Nomad eSIM is cheaper in Thailand and Mexico, and cheaper in Japan at the checked sale price. Spain is tied; Airalo costs less in the United States. At Nomad eSIM’s regular Japan price, the two 30-day packages are tied. Extra validity gives you more time, not more data.

If You Need More Data During the Trip

The selected Nomad eSIM fixed plans support add-ons on the installed eSIM. Buy the add-on before the original package runs out of data or expires. It starts when the original allowance is exhausted or its validity ends; unused base data does not roll over. See Nomad eSIM’s add-on instructions.

The selected Airalo fixed-data packages offer top-ups after installation, including when the original data or validity has run out. Check the new package’s price, allowance and duration. Buying a top-up does not extend the expiry of unused data in the original package.

Airalo also offers optional automatic renewals. Its instructions say the next package is purchased when 10% of the data remains and starts when the current allowance runs out. Expiry alone does not trigger renewal. If the package expires with data remaining, use a suitable manual top-up. See Airalo’s renewal conditions.

If You Return on a Future Trip

Airalo has the better-documented reuse option for the selected plans: keep the eSIM installed and buy a compatible top-up if one remains available for your return destination. This does not preserve expired data or turn a local eSIM into a regional plan. See Airalo’s eSIM reuse guidance.

For the selected Nomad eSIM fixed plans, an add-on must be purchased during the active-plan window. Its expiry guidance directs users to buy a new plan if the original eSIM expires or runs out without a queued add-on. This future-trip distinction does not reduce the benefit of having 30 days to use the original allowance during the current trip.

Setup Before You Travel

Before paying, check eSIM compatibility and confirm that your phone is carrier-unlocked. Install over reliable Wi-Fi and follow the selected package’s activation instructions. The compared Nomad eSIM 10GB plans start on a supported destination network or automatically after 60 days from purchase; Mexico’s 10GB package has a 30-day automatic-start window.

All 15 selected Airalo fixed-data packages allow installation before travel and begin their validity when they connect to a supported network in the coverage area. They allow 365 days from purchase for that first connection, including the selected Mexico data-only plans. This is an activation deadline, not 365 days of paid service: the package lasts its purchased 7, 15 or 30 days once activated.

If your phone supports dual SIM, you can keep your home SIM active for calls and texts while using the travel eSIM for mobile data. Disable data roaming on the home line and check its calling and messaging charges.

Hotspot and Support

Both providers support hotspot use on the selected fixed-data plans, with no separate tethering allowance shown. Shared traffic uses the same data balance. Device compatibility, local coverage and network conditions affect hotspot performance with either provider. Airalo may require an APN adjustment; our eSIM setup and troubleshooting guides explain the practical steps.

Nomad eSIM advertises 24/7 support through chat and email; Airalo advertises 24/7 multilingual support, with chat and WhatsApp contact options. We did not test response times. If connectivity fails, contact support promptly and follow its troubleshooting instructions before deleting the eSIM. Refund eligibility depends on the applicable policy, plan status and usage; neither provider guarantees a refund for every activated or partly used package.

Provider Reviews

Nomad eSIM: 30-Day Value and Carrier Choice

Nomad eSIM scores 82.1/100 for our five-country comparison of 7–21-day trips. Its strongest case is a competitively priced fixed-data package with 30 days to use it, hotspot support and clear information about the networks included. Every selected 10GB plan lists two operators.

For 10GB with the same 30-day validity, Nomad eSIM costs less than Airalo in Thailand and Mexico, and in Japan at the checked sale price. Spain is tied, while Airalo is cheaper in the United States. At Nomad eSIM’s regular Japan price, the two 30-day plans are also tied.

Nomad eSIM’s Japan 10GB plan shows 30-day validity, KDDI au and SoftBank access, hotspot support and add-on availability. Click to enlarge.
  • Trip flexibility: The 30-day validity leaves room if a two-week stay becomes three weeks, provided data remains and the destination is covered.
  • Network choice: Two listed operators in all five selected 10GB plans; check larger packages separately because their networks can differ.
  • Hotspot: Supported on every selected fixed plan, with no separate tethering cap shown.
  • Early setup: The compared 10GB plans start on a supported destination network or automatically after 60 days from purchase, except Mexico’s 10GB plan, which has a 30-day deadline.
  • App and web management: View the remaining allowance and expiry, and purchase eligible add-ons through the Manage area before the current package runs out or expires.
  • Customer support: Available 24/7 through chat or email for setup, activation and connectivity questions.

The main continuation limit is the add-on deadline. Buy an eligible add-on before the original package runs out of data or expires; unused base data does not roll into it. Without a queued add-on, Nomad eSIM’s expiry guidance directs you to buy a new plan. Airalo provides a better-documented route for reusing an installed eSIM on a later return trip when a compatible top-up remains available.

Choose Nomad eSIM when its 30-day destination price is competitive and you want hotspot support plus the option to add more data during the trip. The longer validity is useful when your return date may change, even if you never need to reuse the eSIM on a future trip.

Read our full Nomad eSIM review for a closer look at plans, setup and account management.

Airalo: Shorter Plans and Post-Expiry Top-Ups

Airalo is a practical choice for shorter trips and for adding a new allowance after the original package ends. It scores 77.5–82.6/100 in our five-country comparison of 7–21-day trips. Its selected 5GB/seven-day plans cost less than Nomad eSIM’s alternatives in the United States, Spain and Thailand; its US 10GB/30-day plan is also cheaper than Nomad eSIM’s equal-duration option.

For a return to the same country, a compatible top-up can be added to the existing local eSIM when one remains available. This saves another installation, but it does not preserve expired data or extend the eSIM’s coverage to other countries. Check top-up availability before the next trip.

  • Validity choice: The selected markets offer 7-, 15- and 30-day fixed-data options. Choose 30 days upfront if your stay may become longer.
  • More data: All 15 selected fixed-data packages offer top-ups after installation, including after the original data or validity runs out.
  • Optional renewals: These respond to data usage; expiry alone does not trigger automatic renewal. A manual top-up may be needed when a package expires with data remaining.
  • Early setup: The selected packages start on a supported destination network and allow 365 days from purchase for that first connection, including the Mexico data-only plans.
  • Hotspot and help: The selected fixed plans support tethering, and Airalo advertises 24/7 multilingual support through chat, WhatsApp and other contact routes.

Check the destination before choosing on price or carrier access. Airalo’s selected 10GB plans list two operators in four of the five markets. Spain lists only Orange, while the current Mexico data-only plans include Movistar and AT&T. For 10GB with equal 30-day validity, Nomad eSIM costs less in Thailand and Mexico, and in Japan at the checked sale price.

Airalo’s score is a range because we could not confirm that both remaining data and expiry are displayed for the selected plans in the app or website. This is a limit of the evidence, not a finding that those features are missing. See how the score range is calculated.

Choose Airalo when its package is cheaper for your travel dates, its listed carriers suit the route, or post-expiry top-ups and conditional eSIM reuse matter to you.

Free Trials, Loyalty and First-Time Value

Free trials, discount codes and rewards can improve the value of either provider, but they did not affect our editorial scores. These benefits depend on account eligibility and current terms, so choose the offer that fits your purchase instead of comparing only the headline percentage.

Nomad eSIM Free Trial

The Nomad eSIM Free Trial offers eligible new users 1GB for three days across 76 destinations, with no payment card required and hotspot use supported. Check that your destination is included before redeeming it.

Install the trial within 15 days of redemption. It starts when it connects to an eligible network, or automatically 15 days after redemption if it remains unused. That 15-day window is separate from the trial’s three-day service period.

Redeeming the trial removes eligibility for other first-time-user promotions, including MYTECHGUIDE15. Choose the trial when you want to check installation and basic connectivity first, or the discount when you are ready to buy an eligible paid plan. Review the current Nomad eSIM Free Trial offer before redeeming it; the two offers cannot be combined.

For repeat purchases, Nomad Points and Airmoney are useful when you will use the credit on another trip; Weekly Wins adds rewards for regular participation. Compare the plan’s price, coverage and validity first, then count only rewards you expect to redeem before they expire.

Which eSIM Should You Choose?

Start with the price for your destination, then check how long the allowance remains usable. Nomad eSIM’s 30-day plans give you more time if a trip runs longer, provided data remains. Airalo also sells 30-day packages and offers top-ups after the original package expires. Extra time during this trip and reuse on a future trip are separate benefits.

Recommended choice between Nomad eSIM and Airalo by destination, trip length and data needs
Travel scenario Better choice Why
You need 5GB for a seven-day trip Airalo in the USA, Spain and Thailand; Nomad eSIM in Mexico These are the lower-priced selected packages. Japan is tied at US$10, but Nomad eSIM gives you 30 days to use the data instead of seven.
You need 10GB for a two-week trip Airalo in the USA and Spain; Nomad eSIM in Thailand, Mexico and Japan on sale Nomad eSIM’s selected packages last 30 days; the cheaper Airalo alternatives last 15 days. Japan’s Nomad eSIM advantage depends on the checked US$16 sale.

Final Verdict: Is Nomad eSIM or Airalo Better?

Neither provider is a clear overall winner for the five destinations and 7–21-day trips compared here. Nomad eSIM scores 82.1/100, while Airalo scores 77.5–82.6/100. The results overlap; Airalo’s range reflects information we could not confirm about viewing remaining data and expiry for the selected plans.

Choose Nomad eSIM for lower 10GB/30-day prices in Thailand and Mexico, and in Japan at the checked sale price. The 30-day validity gives you room if a two-week stay becomes three weeks, provided data remains. Its selected fixed plans support hotspot use and eligible add-ons, which must be bought before the original data runs out or the plan expires. In Spain, its Movistar and Orange combination also gives you an alternative to Airalo’s listed Orange network.

Choose Airalo when its shorter packages fit firm travel dates, or for the cheaper US 10GB/30-day option. Its selected fixed plans support top-ups after the original data or validity ends. For a later return to the same destination, keeping the eSIM installed can save another installation if a compatible top-up remains available.

A longer validity period helps during the current trip; reusing an eSIM later saves another installation but still requires a new paid allowance. Airalo also offers 30-day packages, so compare equal validity when your dates are uncertain. Choose the exact plan whose price, allowance and supported carriers fit your route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nomad eSIM cheaper than Airalo?

It depends on the destination and validity. For our 10GB/two-week comparison, Airalo costs less in the United States and Spain, while Nomad eSIM costs less in Thailand, Mexico and Japan at the checked sale price. Those Nomad eSIM packages last 30 days; the Airalo packages last 15. At equal 30-day validity, Spain is tied, and Japan is tied at regular prices.

Which is easier to use, Nomad eSIM or Airalo?

Both support installation before travel and activation on a supported destination network for the selected fixed plans. We did not conduct hands-on usability tests, so we cannot name an easier app. Airalo offers more flexibility if the original package has already ended because compatible top-ups can remain available. Nomad eSIM’s eligible add-ons must be bought before the original data runs out or the plan expires.

Can I use a hotspot with Nomad eSIM and Airalo?

Yes. Both support tethering on the selected fixed-data plans, with no separate hotspot allowance shown. Shared traffic uses the same data balance. On unlimited plans, check the exact tethering terms and high-speed allowance. Hotspot performance depends on the device and network with either provider; Airalo may also require an APN adjustment.

Which provider is better for a longer trip?

Compare plans that cover the full stay: both providers offer 30-day fixed packages. Nomad eSIM’s selected 30-day plans leave room if a two-week trip becomes three weeks, provided data remains. Airalo can be cheaper at the same duration, as its US 10GB/30-day plan shows. A longer validity period gives you more time to use the allowance, not extra data.

Which is better for a first-time eSIM user?

Nomad eSIM is a useful starting point if you qualify for its no-card trial: 1GB for three days across 76 destinations, with hotspot supported. Check that your destination is included. Redeeming the trial removes eligibility for other first-time-user offers, including MYTECHGUIDE15, so choose between testing connectivity and discounting an eligible first purchase. For a paid plan, compare the destination price, validity and activation instructions from both providers.

Can I reuse the same eSIM on another trip?

Airalo allows reuse of an installed eSIM when a compatible top-up remains available for the destination. Keep the profile installed and check availability before returning; expired data does not carry over. For the selected Nomad eSIM fixed plans, buy an eligible add-on before the original allowance is exhausted or expires. If it ends without a queued add-on, Nomad eSIM’s guidance directs you to buy a new plan. Having 30 days to use the original data is a separate benefit from reusing the profile months later.
