eSIM Troubleshooting
Fix activation errors, missing mobile data, APN problems, weak connections, hotspot failures and other common eSIM issues.
Common eSIM Problems and Fixes
30 questionsThe most common causes are incorrect mobile data settings, disabled data roaming, an inactive plan, missing APN details, poor coverage or a device compatibility issue. Confirm that the eSIM is turned on, selected for mobile data and still within its validity period.
The phone may not be registered on a supported partner network. Restart the device, toggle airplane mode, confirm that the eSIM line is enabled and try automatic or manual network selection. Also check whether the plan covers your current location.
Signal bars only show that the phone can see a network. Mobile data may still fail if the wrong SIM is selected for data, data roaming is disabled, the APN is incorrect or the plan has expired or run out of data.
Activation can remain pending when the phone has weak internet access, the plan activates only in the destination or the carrier is still provisioning the profile. Keep the device connected to Wi-Fi, restart it and wait a few minutes before trying again.
Possible causes include an expired or already-used QR code, an incompatible device, a carrier lock, incorrect manual details or a temporary provider problem. Verify the exact device model and contact the provider before deleting the profile.
The code may be expired, already used, cropped, blurry or linked to another device. Increase screen brightness, display the complete code and try again. If it still fails, request manual installation details or a replacement code from the provider.
Many eSIM profiles can be installed only once. The code may already be linked to another device or to a previous installation on the same phone. Contact the provider to confirm whether the profile can be transferred or reissued.
The device may not support eSIM, the regional model may be incompatible, the phone may be carrier-restricted or the software may be outdated. Confirm the exact model number, install available updates and check the manufacturer’s compatibility information.
Turn off airplane mode, enable the travel eSIM, select it for mobile data and apply the provider’s roaming instructions. It can take several minutes to register on a partner network. Restart the phone or select a supported network manually if needed.
Many travel eSIMs require data roaming because they use partner networks. Enable it only for the travel eSIM and keep roaming disabled on the primary SIM unless your home plan includes it. Follow the provider’s setup instructions.
Open the mobile network settings for the eSIM and look for Mobile Data Network, Access Point Names or APN. Compare the value with the provider’s instructions. Enter it exactly, including capitalization and punctuation where specified.
Some devices hide APN settings when they are configured automatically or controlled by the carrier. Restart the device, install available updates and check the provider app or instructions. If the field remains unavailable, contact the provider or carrier.
Automatic network selection may choose any supported partner network. If performance is poor, disable automatic selection and try another operator listed by the provider. An unsupported network will usually fail to register.
Automatic mobile data switching may be enabled. Turn it off and explicitly select the travel eSIM for mobile data. This is important abroad because the primary line could otherwise use chargeable roaming data.
The top-up may still be processing, may require manual activation or may have been added to a different eSIM profile. Refresh the provider app, restart the phone and confirm that the correct plan and profile are active.
An update can reset network preferences, mobile data selection or APN settings. Restart the device, confirm that the eSIM line is enabled and review the data, roaming and APN settings. Avoid deleting the profile unless the provider confirms reinstallation is possible.
The phone may have changed the default data line or failed to register automatically. Check that the eSIM is still enabled, selected for mobile data and connected to a supported network. Toggle airplane mode and retry network selection.
Slow speed can result from weak signal, congestion, throttling, a fair-use limit, distant data routing or a poor partner network. Test another supported network, move to a different location and check whether your high-speed allowance has been used.
Frequent disconnections can be caused by weak coverage, unstable automatic network selection, outdated software or a provider outage. Restart the phone, update the software and try another supported network if manual selection is available.
The plan may restrict tethering, the hotspot feature may be disabled or the APN may not support it. Confirm that hotspot use is allowed, restart the phone and review the provider’s APN and tethering instructions.
A data-only eSIM does not support traditional calls. If calls should arrive on your primary SIM, make sure that line remains enabled and has roaming access. Dual SIM behavior can also vary while another line is in an active call.
Verification messages normally arrive on the SIM linked to your phone number, not the data-only travel eSIM. Keep the primary SIM enabled, confirm that it can register abroad and check whether the sender or carrier blocks international delivery.
Some travel eSIM providers route traffic through regional or international gateways. Your phone can be connected to a local network while websites detect an IP address elsewhere. This is usually normal and does not necessarily indicate a setup problem.
Apps may block foreign IP addresses, require a home-country network, reject roaming connections or trigger security checks. Try disabling a VPN, changing the partner network or using Wi-Fi. Banking and streaming apps are especially sensitive to location changes.
The selected VPN server or protocol may not work well with the current mobile network or data routing. Try another server, change protocol, restart the VPN app or test the connection without the VPN to isolate the cause.
It can fix corrupted mobile, Wi-Fi or APN settings, but it also removes saved Wi-Fi networks and other network preferences. Use it after simpler steps fail, and make sure you know the provider’s required APN and roaming settings.
Only when the provider confirms that reinstallation is supported. Many QR codes can be used once, so deleting the profile may permanently remove access. Try restarting, checking settings and contacting support before deletion.
Turn the eSIM line off, wait about 30 seconds and turn it back on. You can also toggle airplane mode or restart the phone. Then confirm the correct data line, roaming setting and partner network.
Check the provider’s status page, app, support channels and recent customer reports. Test another supported partner network and compare with Wi-Fi or another SIM. A widespread outage usually affects multiple users or locations.
Provide the order number, destination, device model, operating system, eSIM identifier if requested, screenshots of the error, selected network, APN settings and steps already tried. Do not publicly share the QR code, activation code or full account credentials.
