Installation and Activation Questions
25 questionsTo install an eSIM, open your device’s mobile or cellular settings and choose the option to add an eSIM. Then scan the provider’s QR code, use its app, open an activation link or enter the installation details manually. Keep a stable internet connection until the profile has finished downloading.
Open Settings, tap Cellular or Mobile Data, then tap Add eSIM or Set Up Cellular. Choose the setup method offered by your provider, such as a QR code, carrier transfer or manual details, and follow the on-screen instructions. Menu wording can vary by iOS version and region.
Open Settings, tap Connections, then SIM manager and Add eSIM. You can normally scan a carrier QR code or use another setup option shown by the phone. The exact menu names can differ by Galaxy model, region and software version.
Open Settings, tap Network & internet, then SIMs, Add SIM and Set up an eSIM. Follow the on-screen instructions to select a provider or scan the supplied QR code. The path can vary slightly with the Android version.
Yes. QR-code installation is one of the most common methods. Open the Add eSIM menu on your device and scan the code supplied by the carrier or travel eSIM provider. Treat the code as private account information and do not publish or share it.
Many devices allow manual installation when the provider supplies an SM-DP+ address and activation code. Select the manual-entry option in the Add eSIM menu and enter the details exactly as provided. Not every provider offers manual setup.
Some providers support direct installation through their mobile app. The app may open the device’s eSIM setup screen or transfer the required profile automatically. You may still need to approve the installation in your phone settings.
A working internet connection is normally required because the device must download the eSIM profile. Wi-Fi is recommended, especially before international travel, although another active mobile data connection may also work on some devices.
Usually yes. Installing it before departure gives you time to resolve compatibility or setup problems while you still have reliable internet access. First confirm the provider’s activation policy, because some plans begin when installed while others begin only after connecting to a supported network.
Activation rules vary by provider and plan. A plan may start immediately after installation, when the eSIM first connects to a supported network, on a selected date or after a separate activation step. Check the plan terms before installing it.
Installation downloads the eSIM profile to your device. Activation makes the mobile plan usable on the provider’s network and may happen during installation or later. An eSIM can therefore appear in your settings before its data plan has started.
Open your cellular, mobile network or SIM settings and look for a new line or profile. It may display the provider name, a temporary label or a generic name such as Secondary or Travel. The profile should also have an on-and-off control.
An activated eSIM should register on a supported network and show signal bars, a carrier name or a mobile data connection. Provider apps may also show the plan as active. If it is installed but has no service, check the plan’s activation trigger and device settings.
Not always. You can often keep the primary SIM active for calls and messages while using the travel eSIM for mobile data. To avoid roaming charges, disable data roaming and mobile-data switching on the primary line unless your home plan includes roaming.
Many travel eSIMs require data roaming to be enabled because they connect through partner networks. This does not automatically enable roaming on your primary SIM. Apply the setting only to the travel eSIM and follow the provider’s instructions.
Open your phone’s cellular, mobile data or SIM settings and choose the travel eSIM as the line used for mobile data. If the device offers automatic data switching, disable it when you want to prevent the primary SIM from using chargeable roaming data.
Yes. A clear label such as Travel, Japan or Saily makes it easier to select the correct line for mobile data and roaming. Labels are especially useful when several eSIM profiles are stored on the same device.
Usually yes. You may open the QR code on another screen, use a provider app, enter the setup information manually or save the QR image and select it from the photo library if your phone supports that option. Available methods vary by device and provider.
The code may be blurry, cropped, expired, already used or displayed with insufficient brightness. Clean the camera lens, increase screen brightness and make sure the complete code is visible. If it still fails, request manual installation details or contact the provider.
An activation code is part of the information used to download or authorize an eSIM profile. It may appear with an SM-DP+ address or be embedded inside a QR code. It is not the same as your phone unlock code or account password.
Usually not. Many eSIM QR codes are linked to one profile and can be installed only once or on one device at a time. Reusing the code may fail or require the original profile to be removed and reissued by the provider.
Installation often takes only a few minutes when the device is compatible and the internet connection is stable. Carrier verification or network activation can take longer. Do not interrupt the process or restart the phone unless the setup appears to be stuck.
Yes, if the plan activates on first connection or through a separate activation step. However, installing the profile before departure is safer because you may not have reliable Wi-Fi after arrival. Always follow the provider’s specific timing instructions.
You can usually keep the profile installed but turn the line off until you need it. If the provider says the plan activates only on a supported destination network, leaving it installed should not start the plan, but the provider’s terms take priority.
Label the new line, select it for mobile data, apply the provider’s roaming and APN instructions, and confirm that your primary SIM cannot use unintended roaming data. At the destination, turn the eSIM on, allow it to connect and test mobile internet before leaving Wi-Fi.
