A VPN can reduce speed or increase latency because traffic is encrypted and routed through a VPN server. The effect depends on the VPN protocol, server distance, network quality and device performance. A nearby server is usually faster.
Coverage maps are estimates rather than guarantees. Buildings, terrain, weather, device bands, congestion and partner-network access can all affect real performance. For important trips, compare the provider’s listed network with the local operator’s coverage information.
